Bizarre and Brilliant! - a visit to Thames during the month of November gives you a unique chance to step into a world blending the past with the future. The Thames Steampunk Festival is set to take place in the town centre this year, inviting both enthusiasts and curious newcomers to dive into a vibrant celebration of individual creativity, quirky homemade costumes and gadgets with a Victorian-Industrial inspired aesthetic.

Thames is the perfect location for a Steampunk event due to its rich 19th Century heritage and many buildings from the Victorian era, plus its Gold Mining and industrial past.

What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a distinct subgenre of science fiction that combines technology and design inspired by 19th-century steam-powered machinery. "The Future" as it might have been imagined by inventors from the past. Steampunk often showcases inventions that are out of their time, merging retro-futuristic elements with elegant Victorian fashion and imaginative gadgets. The Thames Steampunk Festival celebrates this intriguing culture, drawing artists, creators, and fans from around the country.

The festival is not merely a showcase of steampunk art and fashion; it's a lively community where creativity thrives. Costume Parade

A highlight of the Thames Steampunk Festival is the grand costume parade. Participants showcase elaborate steampunk outfits, from top hats and goggles to corsets and mechanical accessories. An intriguing collection of moving vehicles like you never could have imagined are also part of the parade, its a family event and includes children and family pets - all presented in a way like you have never seen before. Last year’s parade featured over 100 participants, making it a visual spectacle.

This takes place along Pollen street in the centre of Thames, starting at 11am.

Whether you’re a seasoned steampunk devotee or a first-time visitor, the parade is a fascinating opportunity to appreciate the artistry of costume design. Bring your camera to capture stunning ensembles and creative displays!

Workshops and Demonstrations

For those wanting to immerse themselves in the steampunk world, the festival offers a variety of workshops and demonstrations. These sessions cover topics such as crafting steampunk accessories and exploring the history behind the genre.

Attendees can learn from experienced artisans and creators, gaining hands-on experience. For example, you might participate in a workshop on making your own steampunk gadgets, with past sessions reporting an increase of 75% in participants’ confidence in their crafting skills.
